Does mindful art increase creativity?
For me, the answer is an enthusiastic YES!
You may be wondering, whatever is Mindful Art? Well, it's a mix of many things. Here are some of the elements I find both curious and fabulous:
Freedom of Expression – Mindful art creates a container for total freedom, allowing me to express myself in unique and personal ways.
No Mistakes, No Judgments – There’s no right or wrong in mindful art. It’s a space where creativity is free from judgment.
It’s About the Process – The focus is on the journey, not the final product. Sure, it’s lovely to create something you like, but that’s not the point. The process itself often leads to unexpected moments of joy and satisfaction, and sometimes, yes, I end up loving what I create. But that’s just a bonus!
Agency & Permission – Mindful art gives one full agency. You make your own choices, interpret your work (or not!), and give yourself permission to explore freely. For me, it’s a way to dig into my inner self, using art as a form of meditation–I simply let the flow guide me, quieting my mind and releasing whatever I need in that moment.
Presence in the Moment – Mindful art is about being present—right here, right now. “Today is the only time you have. It's too late for yesterday. And you can't depend on tomorrow. That's why today matters.” – John C. Maxwell. For me, it’s about translating what’s in my heart or what I’m feeling into/onto a mark on a paper or screen.
A different type of Meditation – Mindful art broadens my container of meditation. It offers me countless ways to hold space for myself, show self-compassion, explore with art, and often find joy in the process!
So, my conclusion? Absolutely yes! My daily Mindful Art practice has led to some of the freest and most creative work I’ve done in a long time.
