Moving forward
First and foremost, I'm grateful that the stifling heat of summer is behind me. The relentless Maryland sun had me feeling overwhelmed, unenergized, and basically blah, but with September's arrival, it's time to move forward.
Lately, my focus has been creating artwork that creates a restful, meditative, and mindful place for my heart and soul. My sketchbook has become a sanctuary where lines give way to the freedom of color, texture, and form. I've been exploring the representation of my emotions and thoughts, which are intricately tied to my mental well-being. I believe this is true for all of us! These drawings are my safe space—no rules, no limits—just colors, shapes, pens, brushes, and a few positive affirmations mixed in.
Over the years creating art has been a source of comfort for me, and it remains an incredibly soothing practice. By focusing on the process rather than the outcome, I find relief from stress and anxiety, achieving a sense of calm amidst the busyness of the day. My sketchpad is a playground for experimentation. I date the pages and often note the emotions I'm exploring, embracing the freedom to make mistakes and discover unexpected insights. It's a place without the pressure of perfection. This freedom has led to unexpected discoveries, both internally and art-wise as well, and sometimes a wonderful small, quick art piece!
This visual documentation of thoughts and experiences began during my cancer journey and evolved into The Cancer Courage Card Deck. This project marked the beginning of my true understanding of the power of art for personal healing and growth.
Now, I doodle and sketch regularly and continue to explore new paths in my artistic journey. After illness, the first series I created was called, "What's in My Head," and ongoing projects reflect this evolving exploration. I am now excited to share my knowledge and skills with others. Creating art, doing workshops, and sharing with folks that I know ART HEALS. Helping others through creativity feels great, and I'm grateful for the possibilities and the unfolding journey ahead.
