Bloom Where You Pause
The Art of Slowing Down: Lessons from Flowers (and a Few Bodacious Blobs)
There is something about summer that quietly invites us to slow down.
Flowers don't rush their blooming. They simply unfold in their own time, reaching toward the light one day at a time. I often think we could learn a lot from them.
Lately, I've been spending quiet time in my studio, with paints, markers, and pens in hand, letting whatever wants to appear find its way onto the paper. Something unexpected happened.
My whimsical friends—the Bodacious Blobs—came back out to play. Maybe summer called them back. Maybe I just needed a little more whimsy in my life. Either way, I'm glad they showed up.
They're on the complete opposite end of the creative spectrum from my recent Energy Vibrations paintings—and that's what makes creating so much fun. You never know what's going to show up next!
One by one, the blob family appeared, each proudly holding a colorful summer flower. Every Blob (or Blobette!) seemed to have its own quirky personality. Before I knew it, they came to life.
Then it hit me.
Maybe they were here to remind me—and maybe you, too—of something we often forget.
Don't forget to play.
Somewhere along the way, many of us decided play belonged to childhood. As adults, our days fill up with endless “stuff,” we become so focused on getting everything done that we forget how good it feels to create simply for fun.
But—play isn't just for kids.
I truly believe playfulness is healing.
When we give ourselves permission to doodle, paint, scribble, color, and notice the beauty growing around us, something begins to soften. We breathe a little deeper. We smile a little more. We reconnect with a part of ourselves that has been patiently waiting.
For me, a creative practice isn't a luxury—it's part of my well-being.
Without it, I can easily get caught in circles of thoughts and emotions with no place for them to go. Whether I spend all day in my studio or just ten quiet minutes with a pen in my hand, creating helps me reset. It grounds me, quiets my busy mind, and brings me back to myself.
That's what happened while painting these flower-loving Blobs.
They reminded me not to take life quite so seriously. They reminded me that art doesn't always have to be deep or profound. Sometimes it can simply make us smile.
And sometimes...
that's exactly what we need.
And so, I created Petals & Pals.
For twelve days, I'll be sharing one little Blob or Blobette, each with its own summer flower, a few gentle words, and a mindful reflection. My hope is that these tiny moments of color, whimsy, and joy encourage you to pause, smile, and find a little peace in your day.
Maybe you'll notice a flower on your morning walk.
Maybe you'll spend ten minutes sketching.
Maybe you'll sit quietly with a cup of tea.
Whatever your pause looks like, I hope you give yourself permission to take it.
After all...
flowers don't hurry.
Maybe we don't always have to, either.
